Effective Communication Skills to Boost Your Career

Let’s talk about something that can truly make or break your career: communication skills. Effective communication is key to advancing your career, whether you’re leading a team, negotiating a deal, or networking with colleagues. Today, we are going to dive into some practical tips to help you become a communication superstar.

Active Listening

Many of us aren’t new to this concept, but putting it into practice takes work. Active listening is the foundation of effective communication. It’s all about truly understanding the other person’s message before responding. This means, yes, you have to shut off the inner voice that is antsy to share your thoughts and turn on the part of you that is able to just be present. Focusing on being present instead of focusing on a response is the first key to understanding what the person you are speaking to is looking to convey. A great starting point here is to maintain eye contact. Eye contact will help you stay focused while showing you’re engaged and interested in the conversation. This will also allow you to formulate a thoughtful response and ask clarifying questions to ensure you understand the message. I know the fear in active listening is that you will remember everything you want to respond to. Here is the thing: in actively listening, the goal is understanding and not being heard. In addition, active listening will allow you to remember more of what was said than you may have assumed.

Clear and Concise Messaging

Clear and concise communication can prevent misunderstandings and ensure your message is easily understood. Be clear in your communication through both your verbal and non-verbal communication. In your verbal communication, take some time to organize your thoughts before you head into a meeting or before sending an email. Ensure you are clear in what your message is and that your ask is defined. Avoid jargon, emojis and extra punctuation at all costs. Using simple and concise language will ensure your message is accessible and understandable to everyone.

Your body language, facial expressions, and tone of voice all play a role in how your message is received. Be aware of your body language, you don’t wwant to have taken the time to organize your thoughts to them deliver it with an infamous RBF. Ensure your body language aligns with your words to reinforce your message. A smile or nod can go a long way utilize them to ensure you are providing the non-verbal messaging to support what you are saying.

Empathy and Emotional Intelligence

Empathy and emotional intelligence are crucial for effective communication, especially in leadership roles. Acknowledge the emotions that may be expressed to you by validating their feeling and in instances you may not understand the root cause, ask. Another useful skill to work on is to practice self-regulation with your own emotions. Work to stay calm and composed, even when faced with challenging situations.

In addition to this work on giving and receiving feedback as it’s an essential communication skill in the workplace. Research by London and Smither (2002) suggests that constructive feedback can enhance performance and career growth. Ensure you are specific and providing examples to illustrate your points when giving feedback. Be sure that just in the way you dish out feedback you allow yourself to be open to receive it back. Be open to receiving feedback and use it as an opportunity for growth. I like to say not all feedback is good but be objective and take the feedback you agree with and adjust accordingly.

Assertiveness

Yes, believe it or not being assertive can truly help in your communication, let’s make sure we are clear in what assertiveness means in action. Being assertive means expressing your thoughts and opinions confidently while respecting others. According to research by Lazarus (2000), assertive communication can lead to more effective interactions and reduce conflict. Ways to get started are to use “I” statements to express your thoughts and feelings without blaming or criticizing others. Ensure you are direct and respectful by clearly state your needs or opinions while being considerate of others.
